Installation tips for LED flood light fixtures

 LED Flood Light

1. Angle of incidence

It is the shadows that highlight the undulations of the façade, therefore, the lighting should always provide surface imaging, and the light directed at the façade at the right angle will not form shadows and make the surface appear flat.

Shadow size depends on the surface undulation and the angle of incidence of the light. The average lighting direction angle should be 45°. If the undulation is very small, this angle should be greater than 45 °

2. Lighting direction

In order to make the surface lighting looks balanced, all shadows should be projected in the same direction, for a projection of the surface in the area to provide lighting all lamps should be the same direction of projection. For example, if two lights are symmetrically aimed at a surface in the vertical direction, shadows will be reduced and may appear confusing. Therefore, it may not be possible to see the surface undulations. However, large protrusions can produce large, dense shadows, and to avoid disrupting the integrity of the façade, it is recommended that weaker lighting be provided at an angle of 90° to the main lighting to weaken the shadows.

3. Perspective and lighting direction

In order to see the shadows and surface undulations, the lighting direction should be different from the observation direction, the angle between the two directions should be at least 45 °. However, for monuments that can be seen from several places, it is not possible to strictly follow this rule. The main observation point should be selected and the lighting design should give priority to this observation direction.

4. LED Floodlights

(1) Location

In an urban context, it is usually not possible to install LED floodlights in the ideal location. Adjustments should be made on site to the lighting design-based initial study in order to take into account the physical constraints of the location and to achieve the most satisfactory program, such as the appearance of daylight, glare, maintenance and its adjustment entrance should be taken into account.

(2) Light beam range

The beam width produced by LED floodlights may be larger or smaller, depending on the optical system and the adjustment of the light source's position in the luminaire. By convention, the beam range of LED floodlights is determined by a luminous intensity direction equal to 50% of the peak luminous intensity on the beam axis. The beam range of a circular symmetrical LED floodlight remains constant on all sides, and the beam range of a rectangular LED floodlight is usually ovoid, which is determined by two values corresponding to the two planes of symmetry.

In some applications, the luminaire beam used is asymmetrical in the case of peak light intensity. In this case, the beam range is equal to the two half-angles determined by 50% of the light intensity.

5. Light intensity division curve

In general, if XY is used, where the vertical axis OY indicates the illuminance and the horizontal axis OX indicates the angle of the beam. In most LED floodlights, shifting the light source of the optical system will change the shape of the distribution curve (beam range, light intensity and symmetry).
